The Quiz That Changed My Life

Until the age of 7, I was a nice little Lutheran girl named Connie Oldham.  My Dad would drop me off at sunday school and there was a lovely plastic cake that you were allowed to put your offering into if it was your birthday.

Every Single Sunday...was my birthday.  And I thought my last name was Oldham.  It wasn't.

When I was 7, my parents got saved and started attending an Assembly of God church and as time went on I became the President of the Missionettes and my dad became the church bus driver.  We were very involved in the church.

Then I got my drivers license and Bobbi and I would skip sunday school and go get donuts.

Dear Baby Jesus,

I'm really, really sorry that I took Bobbi out to get donuts and didn't take her to sunday school like I was supposed to.  Please forgive me.

Connie

And then my Dad was in an unfortunate horseback riding accident that left him with nerve damage in his arm and unable to return to the job he'd held for 25 years.  No one from the church came around to ask how we were or if we needed anything.

They never returned to the church.  And neither did I.

Since then...I've always felt like I have a good relationship with God but I didn't think it required me to attend church.  I pray and I read my bible and I think good thoughts.  I just think I'm a Christian.  I don't think I need to narrow it down any more than that.

I was reading Kablooey's post about Oprah saving her soul and I decided to take the quiz that she suggested to find out what religion I should be.  I have to say I was a little shocked!

I'm supposed to be Jewish! Lucky for me...I know a Jewish Life Coach! Here is the email that I sent my friend Jessica Bern.

Dearest Jessica,

I hope this email finds you and Teddy well.  And I hope Phoebe returns home soon.

Today I took a quiz about my religious beliefs and it informed me that I'm supposed to be an Orthodox Jew.  The good news is that I'm open to all possibilities, and as I'm about to turn 40 in 17 days, I'd like to be all that I can be and/or am supposed to be without joining the Army.  Besides...I think the Army is looking for a few good men and I obviously lack the balls for that.

I'm coming to you today to ask for your assistance in becoming Jewish.

Please oh Jewish Life Coach....can you help me?

Love and Stuff,

Connie Weiss(stein)

P.S. My third choice was Islam and Obama is too busy to coach me on that.  He already said No.

I immediately got a response from Jessica that said 'Oy, call me at once, we must talk'. And so it came to pass that I would call Jessica and she would inform me that my first lesson was to always expect the other shoe to drop. If life is good...it won't last. I informed Jessica that I'd already been taught that by my parents so we were good to go.

And then by the power vested in her and Teddy...she gave me my Jewish name. Tamar, a beautiful hebrew name that means Fig Tree.

Stay tuned for my adventures in Judaism with Jessica guiding me.

*disclaimer: I'm not going to convert.  I'm very interested in Judaism  because my children's great grandfather was Jewish and I'd like to teach them about it because it is a part of their history. Also...learning new things is fun.

I just took the quiz, I'm a Quaker! How about THAT? I don't know any Quakers to help guide me in my journey :(

1. Orthodox Quaker (100%)
2. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (87%)
3. Seventh Day Adventist (82%)
4. Hinduism (80%)

OK, your letter to Jessica is hilarious.

And, are you serious?

Ok, here are my top three:

1. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (100%)
2. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (98%)
3. Orthodox Quaker (96%)

Know what is weird, I grew up in Assembly of God church too. Now we mostly go to Baptist, but we may switch over to the Methodist church. I'm sure you'll be shocked to learn that the Southern Baptist is a little too conservative for me. :)

2. Eastern Orthodox (93%)
3. Orthodox Quaker (93%)
4. Roman Catholic (93%)
5. Seventh Day Adventist (89%)

Dude(stein), you're hilarious!

Also, I am not Jewish, but I love the Rabbi Small books by Harry Kemmelman. They are great to listen to on tape, and might even count toward some of your conversion duties.

Holy Baby Jesus on a Swing! One of these things is not like the other... I think I'm hewing a little bit differently than you guys. What was at the bottom of your lists? Because I think we're flipped. Does that mean I'm going to end up in the hot place?

I'm going to take that quiz later to find out why religion I should be. But if it comes back LDS or Muslim, I'm gonna kill myself.

Girl, you are awesome.

And this post was the sh*t!

I just took it. My #1 is Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (100%). #2 and #3 were Orthodox Quaker (90%) and Eastern Orthodox (80%), respectively.

I will say that I have a really great friend who is Jewish and if food were the only religious issue, I would convert just for the kugel.

For the record, my results do not surprise me. No matter what the questions or topics might be (or how I might feel about them) it doesn't change my fundamental belief that Jesus Christ paid the price for my sin and the way to the Father is through him.

I do love me some kugel though.

100% Mainline to Liberal Protestant. I was a little shocked, but in reading the description, I have to say it is pretty spot on! Thanks for the post. Very eye opening!

Apparently Im Liberal Quaker...the word liberal scares me

Bobbi said...

Oh. My. God.
It came back 100% LDS!!!!! WTF!!??

#2 was Jehovah Witness!

Bobbi and I sound like matter and anti-matter. If we both show up in the same room at the same time, the planet may explode. (Either that, or I watched too much Star Trek in my youth.)

kablooey...meet bobbi. Bobbi meet Kablooey. Let's get you guys in the same room and see what happens!

If you really want to be Jewish, the most important thing to remember is to "give good guilt". If you can do that well, you're golden.

Oh wait, you want to be an Orthodox Jew ... put on a wig, stop eating pork, and if you think it'll taste good, don't eat it.

Coming from one fellow Jew to another!

um....is this for real? I know you love Oprah Connie...but who is she to tell you what religion you should be???

And not being a stinker or anything, you don't have to go to church to be religious. God says corporate worship is important in our lives, but as long as you know that God sent Jesus to die for our sins, so that we may live eternally in Him, you are a Christian.

I don't think I have had enough coffee yet today to get this post, though I found it very enjoyable...:)))))

Connie,
This sounds like a really interesting journey to take. I, too, am really disillusioned by religion for similar reasons (and then some) as you. I was raised Jehovah's Witness and it took me until I was 29 years old to get out. Here are the top 5 that the quiz came up with for me:
1. Reform Judaism (100%)
2. Sikhism (92%)
3. Unitarian Universalism (86%)
4. Orthodox Judaism (84%)
5. Liberal Quakers (76%)
This should be really interesting for me to learn with you. I had to look up what Sikhism was as I had never heard of it. I, too consider myself as Christian.
Can't wait to hear more... :-)
