I Owe My Family To eHarmony

After leaving a bad marriage and starting a new life in Denver, I spent a year or so watching Oprah and writing in my journal. I made a list of qualities I wanted to find in a spouse; it was a very long list.

When I was ready to date I tried a couple different websites. I went on what seemed like a hundred dates and met some interesting men. We'd go out for a couple weeks, and then things would fizzle. I was finding that many of these men weren't looking for a long term relationship. They were looking for a good time...if you know what I mean.

My final date did end up lasting several months, but it was because this gentleman's Greek mother was holding me hostage in their house.

After a short break from dating, I did some research and discovered eHarmony. I was encouraged by the fact that I was given a quiz about my personality and lifestyle and that I'd be matched up with men based on our answers. I will admit I was a little skeptical.

I ended up with several matches, but one of them stood out. His answers to my questions were very serious but also witty. It was an added bonus that he was handsome, and I looked forward to our emails. Within a couple of weeks he asked to meet me!

Our first date was 5 hours long over coffee at The Village Inn. I remember thinking I could listen to this man talk for the rest of my life! We discovered our families were so similar, and we felt the same way about so many things. It didn't take long for us to feel like we'd known each other for years and to start spending all of our free time together.

Four months after our first date, Keith proposed to me on a trip to Dallas so he could meet my parents. He popped the question at the Wax Museum in front of my Mom and Bill Clinton, which is comical because we are both Republicans!

Engaged! December 2003

A month later, we closed on our first house. In July 2004, we tied the knot in the backyard of our home, in front of our friends and family! I think we told our story a dozen times that day because everyone was amazed we had met less than a year before.

Our Wedding Day

On a sunny day in April 2006, we became parents for the first time! Our son was born, and I became the most popular person in the family because I produced an heir. Ten and a half months later...our daughter was born! Our family was complete!

Because Two People Fell In Love

It's always been our inside joke that we owe our little family to eHarmony!

  3. I think the most important character trait in a partner is tenacity. When the going gets tough (as is bound to happen in any relationship), you need someone who won’t give up just because things are hard. You need someone who will stick with you through thick and thin.

  6. Awwww you gotta love that. Boyfriend and I have been together 8 months and we too met online (kinda)

I definitely think the most important thing is a self of humor and the ability to allow your significant other the space to be who they are.

Anyway, what I said was HUMOR is the most important quality. If he can't make me laugh, then it's over. But kiss ability is up there too. Can't have a sucky azz kisser on my hands! And big....HANDS.

  32. Humor is important because there are just too many things in life that the only thing you have control of is how you react - someone that can lift my spirits means a lot.

But probably my most important character trait is caring - because if he cares about his family he'll do whatever he can to care for us, do what's best for us and make us happy.

  34. The most important trait for me (and I also met my husband through an on-line dating/marriage site in 2003) is HUMOR .... I say this 2 kids later because when we are sleepless in Denver or going through nutty crazy times, that is the only thing that gets us through. And I would not have married him if he didn't have all the other stuff that was KEY- ESSENTIAL! ;-)

  41. a sense of humor because i need a good laugh every now and again

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't think I can choose just one. A sense of humor, patience, tenacity, good morals, and the ability to think of how something affects others are all tops on my list.

    ReplyDelete
  43. My first thought was honesty. It has to be number one, because you can't build a relationship without it.
After reading through the comments, I really agreed with mami2jcn who said tenacity. After over 8 years of marriage, I can see how we need that to pull through!

    ReplyDelete
  44. that is so sweet. love your story. xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  45. I agree with most that humor is the #1 character trait in a spouse! You just HAVE to be able to laugh together. It's what will get you by when the going gets tough, when you run out of money, when the kids end up in therapy, when things don't go as planned, and when you realize everyone else in your family is nuts-o!

I LOVE this story! Just goes to show you that you were meant to be together...and makes you believe in destiny and fate and all that sappy stuff. ;)
