After leaving a bad marriage and starting a new life in Denver, I spent a year or so watching Oprah and writing in my journal. I made a list of qualities I wanted to find in a spouse; it was a very long list.
When I was ready to date I tried a couple different websites. I went on what seemed like a hundred dates and met some interesting men. We'd go out for a couple weeks, and then things would fizzle. I was finding that many of these men weren't looking for a long term relationship. They were looking for a good time...if you know what I mean.
My final date did end up lasting several months, but it was because this gentleman's Greek mother was holding me hostage in their house.
After a short break from dating, I did some research and discovered eHarmony. I was encouraged by the fact that I was given a quiz about my personality and lifestyle and that I'd be matched up with men based on our answers. I will admit I was a little skeptical.
I ended up with several matches, but one of them stood out. His answers to my questions were very serious but also witty. It was an added bonus that he was handsome, and I looked forward to our emails. Within a couple of weeks he asked to meet me!
Our first date was 5 hours long over coffee at The Village Inn. I remember thinking I could listen to this man talk for the rest of my life! We discovered our families were so similar, and we felt the same way about so many things. It didn't take long for us to feel like we'd known each other for years and to start spending all of our free time together.
Four months after our first date, Keith proposed to me on a trip to Dallas so he could meet my parents. He popped the question at the Wax Museum in front of my Mom and Bill Clinton, which is comical because we are both Republicans!
A month later, we closed on our first house. In July 2004, we tied the knot in the backyard of our home, in front of our friends and family! I think we told our story a dozen times that day because everyone was amazed we had met less than a year before.
On a sunny day in April 2006, we became parents for the first time! Our son was born, and I became the most popular person in the family because I produced an heir. Ten and a half months later...our daughter was born! Our family was complete!

I have to say....a sense of humor. Life can get tough and we all need to be able to laugh about it.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
What a great story you two have!
ReplyDeleteI think the most important character trait in a partner is tenacity. When the going gets tough (as is bound to happen in any relationship), you need someone who won’t give up just because things are hard. You need someone who will stick with you through thick and thin.

ReplyDeleteI love your love story. :)
Awwww you gotta love that. Boyfriend and I have been together 8 months and we too met online (kinda)
ReplyDeleteI definitely think the most important thing is a self of humor and the ability to allow your significant other the space to be who they are.

What a beautiful post, friend!
ReplyDeleteI never knew this, what an awesome story {and holy smokes your kids ares only 10 1/2 months apart?} what a fun story to have. Yay for LOVE!
ReplyDeleteI think the most important trait for me was family values. I knew I wanted a family so to see how close he was to his helped seal the deal.
Aw! I tweeted about this (even before I knew there was a contest, btw...)

ReplyDeleteI just love that story!! You have one beautiful family :) One of my best friends is due with her first baby in April and met her husband on e-harmony too :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Valentine's Day to you all!!
He has to be able to make me laugh, no matter what. David is always there to pick me up. I'm not sure what I would do without him.
ReplyDeleteAw, I love your love story. :)

ReplyDeleteMost important trait is being able to roll with the punches- doesn't take things too seriously and can forgive and move on- in the good way of course.
ReplyDeleteIt was shocking see you as a blonde!

ReplyDeleteThe most important thing for me is that both of us are willing to put the needs of the other one first.
ReplyDeleteWell, I just typed up a big long comment and it's GONE! Stupid iPhone.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, what I said was HUMOR is the most important quality. If he can't make me laugh, then it's over. But kiss ability is up there too. Can't have a sucky azz kisser on my hands! And big....HANDS.
I blogged it. Http://www.impulsiveaddict.com/2012/02/day-of-love.htm

Affection is big for me and getting it at the right time when you need it most is the BEST!!
ReplyDeleteI really love your story! One of my best friends met her husband via AOL instant chat by just picking a random name in a chat room-- 8 years later and a beautiful daughter-- proof that eharmony and online dating works! :)

I'm easy.
https://twitter.com/#!/ASassyRedhead/status/169585706132443137
Humor is important because there are just too many things in life that the only thing you have control of is how you react - someone that can lift my spirits means a lot.
ReplyDeleteBut probably my most important character trait is caring - because if he cares about his family he'll do whatever he can to care for us, do what's best for us and make us happy.

ReplyDeleteThe most important trait for me (and I also met my husband through an on-line dating/marriage site in 2003) is HUMOR .... I say this 2 kids later because when we are sleepless in Denver or going through nutty crazy times, that is the only thing that gets us through. And I would not have married him if he didn't have all the other stuff that was KEY- ESSENTIAL! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love your love story! I love the blonde hair but I think the dark is better, your eyes totally stand out now!
ReplyDeleteI will try to come back tomorrow and do what is needed to win that $100!
Happy V-Day friend!

ReplyDeletea sense of humor for sure... because when the shit hits the fan? it's nice to be able to laugh about it :)
ReplyDeleteand I didn't realize your kids were so close together. bless your heart!
LOVE your story! And we too were engaged around 4 months, and married 6 weeks later. I still love the heck outta my man!!
ReplyDeleteCan I have two traits? HUGE sense of humor, and a good and pure heart. My man has it all!
He MUST love my family as much as I do. I came into the relationship with 6 kids and he had 1, so we had to mesh with one another's kids.
ReplyDeleteOur stories are very similar!
Honesty and high morals go hand in hand!
ReplyDeleteI love your e-harmony story. Gives me hope!
a sense of humor because i need a good laugh every now and again
ReplyDeleteI don't think I can choose just one. A sense of humor, patience, tenacity, good morals, and the ability to think of how something affects others are all tops on my list.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was honesty. It has to be number one, because you can't build a relationship without it.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading through the comments, I really agreed with mami2jcn who said tenacity. After over 8 years of marriage, I can see how we need that to pull through!
that is so sweet. love your story. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI agree with most that humor is the #1 character trait in a spouse! You just HAVE to be able to laugh together. It's what will get you by when the going gets tough, when you run out of money, when the kids end up in therapy, when things don't go as planned, and when you realize everyone else in your family is nuts-o!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this story! Just goes to show you that you were meant to be together...and makes you believe in destiny and fate and all that sappy stuff. ;)
I tweeted!
ReplyDeleteThe most important character trait my partner must have is honesty. That is because I believe all relationships build on trust. I don’t think I can trust someone that’s not honest.

It's hard to think of just one, but I'd say a foundational understanding of partnership...even as it is balanced with the need to be an individual. But knowing you're supported at home by your partner, even if he can suggest tweaks in how you deal with things, can make facing the world a lot easier.
ReplyDeletewolverina401 at gmail dot com
In my opinion, the most important thing to look for in someone you want to spend the rest of your life with is trust because that is the backbone of any relationship. Without having complete trust in your partner, it is very hard for the relationship to weather the bumps that inevitably come.
